About this exercise

The Smith Machine Leg Press is performed by lying on the floor beneath the Smith machine bar and pressing it upward with both feet. This variation mimics the leg press pattern without a dedicated machine and allows heavy quad-focused loading with the safety of the fixed bar path.

How to Perform

  • Position a mat on the floor under the Smith machine and set the bar to a low height
  • Lie on your back and place both feet flat against the bar, hip-width apart
  • Unrack the bar by rotating it and lower it under control toward your chest by bending your knees
  • Press the bar back up by extending your legs until nearly straight, avoiding locking out the knees
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps, then re-rack the bar
