About this exercise

The Smith machine lateral step up is a unilateral lower-body exercise where the barbell of a Smith machine is placed across the upper back and the lifter steps sideways up onto an elevated platform. It targets the quadriceps and glutes while also challenging the hip abductors and lateral stability.

How to Perform

  • Position the Smith machine bar across your upper traps and stand to the side of a step or platform
  • Place the foot closest to the step flat on top of it, keeping the other foot on the floor
  • Drive through the heel of the elevated foot to step up, bringing the trailing leg up beside it
  • Stand fully upright on top of the step, squeezing the glutes at the top
  • Lower the trailing leg back down to the floor with control
