About this exercise

The Smith Machine Hip Raise is a weighted glute bridge performed with the bar resting across the hips. The upper back is braced against a flat bench while the bar provides consistent overload, making it an effective exercise for building glute strength and mass.

How to Perform

  • Place a flat bench behind the Smith machine and set the bar to a low position
  • Sit on the floor with your upper back against the bench edge and the bar resting across your hip crease
  • Pad the bar for comfort if needed, then plant your feet flat on the floor hip-width apart
  • Brace your core and drive your hips upward by squeezing your glutes until your body forms a straight line from knees to shoulders
  • Hold briefly at the top, fully contracting the glutes
  • Lower your hips under control back toward the floor
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps, then re-rack the bar
