About this exercise

The Smith High Pull is an upright-row style movement performed on the Smith machine, pulling the bar from hip height explosively to chin level. The guided bar path keeps the movement consistent while developing the upper traps, lateral deltoids, and rear deltoids.

How to Perform

  • Set the Smith machine bar to about mid-thigh height and stand with feet hip-width apart
  • Grip the bar slightly narrower than shoulder-width with an overhand grip
  • Unlock the bar and allow it to hang at arm's length in front of your thighs
  • Pull the bar explosively upward, leading with the elbows so they rise high and wide
  • Drive the bar up until it reaches chin level, with elbows above the bar at the top
  • Lower the bar in a slow, controlled manner back to the starting position
  • Keep the bar path close to your body throughout the lift
