About this exercise

The Smith machine hang clean is an Olympic-style power movement performed from the hang position using a fixed barbell on a Smith machine. It develops explosive power in the hips and legs while building traps, upper back, and shoulder strength.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart and grip the Smith machine bar just outside hip width with an overhand grip
  • Hinge at the hips to lower the bar to mid-thigh level, keeping your back flat and knees slightly bent
  • Explosively extend your hips, knees, and ankles to drive the bar upward
  • Shrug your shoulders forcefully and pull the bar up close to your body
  • Drop under the bar and rotate your elbows forward into a front rack position to catch it at shoulder height
  • Stand up tall to complete the rep, then lower the bar back to the hang position under control
