About this exercise

The Smith Machine Hack Squat is a lower-body exercise where the bar is positioned behind the body at thigh level, placing the feet forward of the torso. This squat variation places heavy emphasis on the quadriceps while the Smith machine's fixed path provides stability.

How to Perform

  • Set the Smith machine bar to just below hip height and stand facing away from it
  • Position the bar across your upper thighs/glutes with your feet shoulder-width apart and placed slightly in front of your hips
  • Unrack the bar and brace your core
  • Descend into a squat by bending your knees, keeping your torso upright
  • Lower until your thighs are at least parallel to the floor
  • Drive through your heels to return to the starting position
