About this exercise

The Smith Machine Donkey Kick adds progressive overload to the classic bodyweight donkey kick by using the bar as resistance against the heel. With the Smith machine's fixed path, you can safely apply heavier loads to isolate and build the gluteus maximus.

How to Perform

  • Set the Smith machine bar to a low height and position yourself on all fours underneath it
  • Rest the back of one heel against the underside of the bar
  • Brace your core and keep your back flat, neither arched nor rounded
  • Press the bar upward by driving that heel toward the ceiling, extending at the hip
  • Squeeze your glutes hard at the top of the movement
  • Lower your leg back under control until the bar is near its starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
