About this exercise

The Smith machine decline close grip bench press combines a decline angle with a narrow hand placement to maximally target the triceps while also loading the lower chest. The Smith machine's fixed bar path provides stability, allowing you to focus on pressing strength and triceps engagement without requiring a spotter.

How to Perform

  • Set a bench to a decline angle (15–30 degrees) and position it under the Smith machine bar
  • Lie on the bench with your feet secured and grip the bar with hands shoulder-width or slightly narrower apart
  • Unrack the bar and hold it directly above your lower chest with arms fully extended
  • Lower the bar under control to your lower chest, keeping elbows close to your body
  • Press the bar back up in a straight line until the arms are fully extended
  • Complete all reps, then re-rack by rotating the bar into the safety hooks
