About this exercise

The Smith Machine Decline Bench Press targets the lower chest using the guided bar path of the Smith machine. Lying on a decline bench allows greater emphasis on the sternal and lower pectoral fibers while the fixed bar track improves stability and control throughout the lift.

How to Perform

  • Set a bench to a decline angle (15–30°) and position it under the Smith machine bar
  • Lie back on the bench with your feet secured under the pads, ensuring your chest is directly below the bar
  • Unrack the bar by rotating it and lower it under control to your lower chest
  • Press the bar back up in a slight arc until your arms are fully extended
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps, then re-rack by rotating the bar into the safety hooks
