About this exercise

The Smith machine close grip bench press is a triceps-dominant pressing exercise performed with hands placed narrower than shoulder-width on the fixed bar. The Smith machine removes the balance demand of a free-weight bar, letting the lifter concentrate fully on triceps extension and chest contraction.

How to Perform

  • Lie on a flat bench positioned under the Smith machine bar, with the bar aligned over your lower chest
  • Grip the bar with hands placed slightly narrower than shoulder-width, using an overhand grip
  • Unhook the bar and lower it with control to your lower chest, keeping your elbows tucked close to your sides
  • Press the bar back up to full arm extension, squeezing the triceps at the top
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor and your lower back in a natural arch throughout
  • Re-rack the bar after completing all reps
