About this exercise

A compound back exercise performed on the Smith machine with a hip-hinge torso position and an overhand (pronated) grip. The fixed bar path of the Smith machine provides stability while you drive the bar into the lower chest, maximally loading the lats and upper back.

How to Perform

  • Set the barbell on the Smith machine to about mid-thigh height, then load it with an appropriate weight
  • Stand facing the bar, grip it just wider than shoulder-width with an overhand (pronated) grip
  • Hinge at the hips until your torso is roughly parallel to the floor, knees slightly bent and back flat
  • Brace your core and retract your shoulder blades before initiating the pull
  • Row the bar upward toward your lower chest, driving your elbows back and up
  • Squeeze your lats and upper back at the top for a brief pause
  • Lower the bar in a controlled manner back to the starting position
  • Complete all reps, then re-rack the bar safely
