Slight Lean Step Out

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Slight Lean Step Out.

EasyGlutesCore

About this exercise

A bodyweight lateral stepping drill performed with a slight forward lean at the hips, emphasizing glute activation and lateral hip stability. The forward lean shifts load onto the posterior chain, making each step-out more challenging for the glutes and core than a standard lateral step.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet together and hinge slightly forward at the hips, keeping your back flat and core braced
  • Maintain the slight forward lean throughout the movement
  • Step one foot out to the side a comfortable distance, landing softly with a slight bend in the knee
  • Pause to feel the glute activation on the stepping leg
  • Bring the trailing foot back to meet the standing foot
  • Alternate stepping out to the left and right for the desired number of reps
  • Keep your torso stable and avoid letting your chest drop or your hips twist
