Single Leg Hack Squat

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Single Leg Hack Squat.

HardQuadriceps

About this exercise

A unilateral variation of the hack squat performed on a sled machine, placing the entire load on one leg at a time. This challenges quadriceps strength and single-leg stability more intensely than the bilateral version, making it an advanced machine-based leg exercise.

How to Perform

  • Load the hack squat machine and position yourself with one foot centered on the platform and the other foot held off
  • Place your back flat against the pad and release the safety handles
  • Slowly lower the sled by bending the working knee until your thigh reaches roughly parallel to the platform
  • Keep your heel flat on the platform and knee tracking over your toes
  • Drive through your heel to press back up to the starting position without locking out the knee fully
  • Complete all reps on one leg before switching sides
  • Re-engage the safety handles before stepping off
