Hack Squat

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Hack Squat.

About this exercise

The hack squat is performed on a dedicated angled sled machine that supports the back, allowing a deep squat motion with a strong quad bias. Because the torso is fixed against the pad, the movement isolates the legs more directly than a free-weight squat.

How to Perform

  • Step onto the foot platform with feet shoulder-width apart and toes slightly out, then rest your shoulders and back against the pads
  • Release the safety handles and bend your knees to lower the sled, aiming for thighs parallel to or slightly below the platform
  • Drive through your feet to push the sled back up, stopping just short of full knee lockout
  • Keep your heels flat on the platform and your lower back in contact with the pad at all times
  • Re-engage the safety handles at the end of your set

About the Hack Squat

The Hack Squat is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
