Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Sled Backward Angled Calf Raise.

MediumCalves

About this exercise

A calf raise performed on an angled sled with the body facing away from the sled, allowing a deeper stretch and greater range of motion than a standard standing calf raise. The loaded sled provides resistance while the backward angle shifts more emphasis onto the gastrocnemius.

How to Perform

  • Load the sled with an appropriate weight
  • Position yourself facing away from the sled, leaning back against it at an angle
  • Place the balls of your feet on the edge of the platform with your heels hanging freely
  • Lower your heels as far as possible to achieve a full stretch in the calves
  • Press through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as possible
  • Hold briefly at the top to maximise the calf contraction
  • Lower slowly back to the stretched position under control

About the Sled Backward Angled Calf Raise

The Sled Backward Angled Calf Raise is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
