45° Leg Press (wide stance)

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the 45° Leg Press (wide stance).

MediumGlutesQuadriceps

About this exercise

The 45° wide-stance leg press places your feet wider than shoulder-width on the sled platform, shifting emphasis toward the inner thighs and glutes while still heavily loading the quadriceps. Performed on a 45-degree angled leg press machine, it allows heavy loading with less spinal compression than a barbell squat.

How to Perform

  • Sit in the leg press machine and place your feet wide on the platform, toes angled slightly outward
  • Release the safety handles and lower the sled by bending your knees toward your chest until your thighs reach roughly parallel to the platform
  • Press evenly through your entire foot to extend your legs back to the starting position without locking out the knees
  • Keep your lower back flat against the pad throughout the movement
  • Re-engage the safety handles after completing all reps
