About this exercise

The sitting thoracic spine flexion stretch mobilizes the mid and upper back by rounding forward from a seated position, gently lengthening the muscles along the thoracic spine. It is useful for relieving stiffness caused by prolonged upright or extended postures.

How to Perform

  • Sit upright on a chair or on the floor with feet flat and hands clasped behind your head or crossed over your chest
  • Exhale and slowly round your upper and mid back forward, tucking your chin toward your chest
  • Curl through the thoracic vertebrae progressively, allowing your elbows to come forward
  • Hold the flexed position for the desired duration, breathing gently
  • Slowly extend back to an upright position and repeat
