About this exercise

A yoga-inspired mobility drill combining the lotus sitting position with a hip rotation and lateral side bend, opening the hips, stretching the inner thighs, and mobilizing the lateral spine. Regular practice improves hip flexibility and lateral range of motion through the thoracic spine.

How to Perform

  • Sit on the floor in lotus position with each foot resting on the opposite thigh; use a half-lotus if full lotus is not accessible
  • Place your hands lightly on your knees or beside your hips for initial support
  • Begin a gentle horizontal rotation of the hips, shifting your weight gradually to one side
  • As you lean to that side, allow your torso to follow in a lateral side bend toward the same hip
  • Hold the stretched position for several breaths, then return to center and repeat on the other side
