About this exercise

The Sit-up with Arms on Chest is a fundamental bodyweight core exercise where the arms are crossed over the chest rather than placed behind the head. This removes the tendency to pull on the neck, keeping the focus squarely on the abdominals throughout the movement.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor
  • Cross your arms over your chest, placing each hand on the opposite shoulder
  • Engage your core and press your lower back gently into the floor
  • Curl your torso upward, lifting your shoulder blades and then your lower back off the floor
  • Rise until your torso is roughly perpendicular to the floor
  • Slowly lower your torso back to the starting position
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps
