About this exercise

The single leg push off is a unilateral lower-body exercise performed from a step or platform, training explosive and functional leg strength by requiring you to fully extend one leg and drive your body upward. It develops quad and glute power and improves single-leg stability and balance.

How to Perform

  • Stand facing a step or box with your working foot flat on the step and the trailing foot on the floor behind you
  • Keep your torso upright and core engaged
  • Drive through the heel of the elevated foot to push your body upward, fully extending the working leg
  • Allow the trailing leg to leave the floor and rise naturally as you push up
  • Land softly back in the starting position with the working foot on the step and the trailing foot on the floor
  • Absorb the landing with a slight knee bend and immediately prepare for the next rep
  • Complete all reps on one leg before switching sides
