About this exercise

The single leg heel touch squat is an advanced unilateral squat variation where you balance on one leg and lower until the heel of the extended (free) leg touches the floor behind you, then stand back up. It demands exceptional hip and knee strength, balance, and mobility.

How to Perform

  • Stand on one foot with the other leg extended in front of you
  • Keep your chest up and arms extended forward for counterbalance
  • Begin to squat down on the standing leg, simultaneously extending the free leg forward and low
  • Lower until the heel of the free leg lightly touches the floor in front of or beside you
  • Pause briefly at the bottom, keeping the standing heel planted
  • Drive through the heel of the standing foot to return to the starting position
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
