About this exercise

The single leg extension crunch is a bodyweight core exercise that combines an abdominal crunch with the simultaneous extension of one leg. Lying on your back, you crunch your upper body up while straightening one leg, creating an anti-rotation and flexion demand that targets the upper abs and challenges core stability.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on your back with both knees bent and feet flat on the floor
  • Place your hands behind your head or cross them over your chest
  • Exhale and curl your upper body into a crunch while simultaneously extending one leg straight out a few inches off the floor
  • Hold the contracted position briefly, squeezing your abs
  • Inhale and lower your upper body and leg back to the starting position
  • Repeat on the same side for the set, then switch legs
