About this exercise

A unilateral calf exercise performed with the ball of one foot on the edge of a step and the heel hanging freely below. The extended range of motion stretches the gastrocnemius and soleus more deeply than a flat-surface calf raise.

How to Perform

  • Stand on a step with the ball of one foot on the edge and the heel hanging off
  • Use a wall or railing for balance if needed
  • Lower your heel as far below the step as comfortable to feel a deep calf stretch
  • Press through the ball of your foot and raise your heel as high as possible
  • Pause at the top and squeeze the calf muscle
  • Slowly lower back to the starting stretch position under control
  • Complete all reps on one leg before switching to the other
