About this exercise

The single-leg calf raise builds strength and size in the calf muscles one leg at a time, improving ankle stability and balancing strength between legs.

How to Perform

  • Stand on one foot holding a dumbbell in the hand on the same side, the other foot lifted off the floor
  • Place the ball of your working foot on a step and hold a support with your free hand for balance
  • Raise your heel as high as possible by pushing through the ball of your foot
  • Pause briefly at the top and squeeze your calf
  • Slowly lower your heel back down under control, feeling a stretch at the bottom
  • Complete all repetitions, then switch to the other leg
