About this exercise

The Single Arm Overhead Dumbbell Squat is a technically demanding movement that combines a full squat with a single-arm overhead hold. It builds leg and glute strength while requiring significant shoulder stability, thoracic mobility, and core control to maintain the dumbbell locked out overhead.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart holding a dumbbell in one hand, pressed directly overhead with a locked-out arm
  • Keep your arm vertical, core tight, and chest up throughout the movement
  • Initiate the squat by pushing your hips back and bending your knees, descending to at least parallel
  • Keep the dumbbell stable overhead — do not let it drift forward or tilt
  • Drive through your heels and extend your hips and knees to return to standing
  • Maintain an upright torso and avoid lateral lean toward or away from the dumbbell
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching arms
