About this exercise

A standing unilateral stretch in which one arm is placed against a wall and the torso rotates or drops away to lengthen the latissimus dorsi and surrounding posterior shoulder muscles. It is an effective mobility drill for improving thoracic rotation and shoulder range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Stand beside a wall and extend one arm, placing your palm or the back of the hand flat against the surface at shoulder height or slightly above
  • Keep the arm straight, step your feet slightly away from the wall, and hinge at the hips to shift weight forward
  • Gently rotate your torso away from the wall so that the lat and side of the ribcage feel the stretch
  • Hold the position and breathe deeply, allowing the muscle to relax further with each exhale
  • Avoid shrugging the shoulder — keep it packed down throughout
  • Hold for the desired duration, then switch sides
