About this exercise

A standing hip abduction exercise where you raise one leg out to the side while holding the back of a chair for balance support. It isolates the glutes and outer thighs and is well suited for beginners, older adults, and rehabilitation contexts.

How to Perform

  • Stand beside a sturdy chair and hold the back with one hand for balance
  • Stand tall with feet together, core lightly engaged
  • Keeping your body upright and the raised leg straight, lift your outside leg out to the side as high as comfortable
  • Avoid tilting your torso sideways — movement should come from the hip, not the waist
  • Pause briefly at the top of the lift
  • Lower your leg back to the starting position with control
  • Complete all repetitions on one side, then switch sides
