About this exercise

A bodyweight lower-body exercise that combines a squat with lateral movement, shifting body weight from side to side to work the quadriceps, glutes, and inner thighs while adding a dynamic component. It is effective for warm-ups, conditioning, and developing lateral hip stability.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and toes pointing slightly outward, arms in front of the chest for balance
  • Lower into a squat by pushing the hips back and bending the knees until the thighs are parallel to the floor
  • While holding the low squat position, step one foot laterally so the feet are wider than shoulder-width
  • Shift your weight to the stepped side, fully loading that leg in the low squat
  • Step the other foot to meet it so feet return to shoulder-width
  • Continue stepping to the same side for the desired reps, then reverse direction
  • Keep the chest upright, knees tracking over the toes, and stay low throughout the lateral movement

About the Lateral Squat Walk

The Lateral Squat Walk is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
