About this exercise

A functional conditioning drill where you step laterally, pick up a dumbbell from the floor, and carry it back to the start, challenging hip stability, grip strength, and cardiovascular endurance. The lateral movement pattern develops coordination and athleticism.

How to Perform

  • Place a dumbbell on the floor to one side, a few steps away
  • Stand in an athletic stance with feet hip-width apart
  • Step sideways toward the dumbbell, maintaining a low athletic position
  • Hinge at the hips to pick up the dumbbell with the near hand
  • Carry the dumbbell back as you side-step to the starting position
  • Set the dumbbell down and repeat, or switch to the other side
