About this exercise

The side step fly pairs a lateral step with a simultaneous reverse fly arm motion, targeting the rear deltoids and shoulder stabilizers while engaging the outer thighs and glutes from the stepping action. The combination makes it a practical full-body conditioning drill suitable for warm-ups or circuit training.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet together and arms extended in front of you at shoulder height, palms facing down
  • Step to the right with your right foot while simultaneously opening both arms out to the sides in a rear fly
  • Squeeze the rear deltoids at the top of the fly as you complete the step
  • Bring your left foot to meet your right foot and return your arms to the starting position
  • Step to the left with your left foot and repeat the fly motion to the opposite side
  • Keep a slight bend in the elbows throughout and avoid shrugging the shoulders
  • Continue alternating directions for the desired number of reps
