MediumObliques

About this exercise

The side plank raise and crunch combines a side plank hip lift with a lateral crunch to intensely target the obliques and core stabilizers. From a side plank position, you raise your hips off the floor and then crunch your top elbow toward your top knee, creating a double-duty oblique contraction in every rep.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side and prop yourself up on your forearm with your elbow directly under your shoulder
  • Stack your feet or stagger them for balance, with your hips lowered toward the floor
  • Press your forearm into the ground and lift your hips until your body forms a straight diagonal line
  • At the top of the hip raise, bring your top elbow and top knee toward each other in a lateral crunch
  • Extend back to the straight side plank position, then lower your hips back toward the floor
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other
