About this exercise

The Side Lying Outward Knee Kick is a floor exercise performed on your side in which you lift the top knee outward and then extend the leg into a kick before returning to the starting position. It targets the hip abductors and glutes while also engaging the core for lateral stability.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side with your hips stacked, knees bent to about 90 degrees, and head resting on your bottom arm
  • Brace your core to keep your torso stable
  • Lift your top knee upward away from your bottom knee as far as comfortable, keeping your feet together (clamshell position)
  • From the open position, extend your top leg outward into a straight kick
  • Bend the knee back to the open position, then lower it back down to meet your bottom knee
  • Repeat for the desired number of reps, then switch sides
