About this exercise

A rotator-cuff strengthening exercise performed lying on your side, focusing on the internal rotators of the shoulder — primarily the subscapularis. It is a staple in shoulder rehabilitation and prehabilitation programs to improve joint health and stability.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side on a flat surface with your bottom arm extended for support or folded under your head
  • Hold a light dumbbell in your top hand with your elbow bent to 90 degrees and resting against your side
  • Starting with your forearm pointing upward, slowly rotate your shoulder to lower the dumbbell toward the floor in front of you
  • Stop just before your forearm touches the floor
  • Rotate back up to the starting position in a controlled manner
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
