Side Plank Hip Abduction

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Side Plank Hip Abduction.

MediumObliques

About this exercise

The side bridge hip abduction combines a side plank hold with a top-leg raise, simultaneously challenging lateral core stability and hip abductor strength. Balancing on one forearm and the side of one foot, you lift the top leg to recruit the gluteus medius, TFL, and obliques in an integrated movement. It is a highly effective drill for improving hip stability and reducing the risk of knee and lower back injuries.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side and prop yourself up on your forearm with your elbow directly below your shoulder
  • Stack your feet or place the bottom foot slightly in front for added stability
  • Lift your hips off the floor to form a straight line from head to feet in the side bridge position
  • Brace your core and keep your hips square to the front
  • With the top leg straight and toes pointing forward, slowly raise it toward the ceiling
  • Pause at the top for a moment, then lower the top leg back with control
  • Complete the desired reps on one side, then switch sides
