About this exercise

Shoulder lateral rotation, also known as external rotation, is a mobility drill that rotates the upper arm outward away from the body's midline. It targets the posterior rotator cuff muscles — primarily the infraspinatus and teres minor — and is essential for shoulder health and joint stability.

How to Perform

  • Stand or sit upright with the upper arm held at your side and elbow bent to 90 degrees
  • Keep the elbow pinned to your side throughout the movement
  • Slowly rotate the forearm outward, away from the midline of your body
  • Pause at the end of your comfortable range, feeling engagement in the back of the shoulder
  • Return to the starting position in a controlled manner and repeat
