About this exercise

A mobility drill that trains active shoulder abduction by raising the arms out to the sides through the full available range of motion. It improves lateral deltoid activation and shoulder joint mobility, and is commonly used as a warm-up or corrective exercise.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall with your arms at your sides and shoulders relaxed
  • Engage your core and keep your neck neutral
  • Slowly raise both arms out to the sides, leading with the elbows
  • Continue lifting until your arms reach shoulder height or the limit of your comfortable range
  • Lower your arms with control and repeat
