About this exercise

A gentle seated stretch and mobility exercise performed on a chair where you bend laterally to each side to lengthen the obliques and side body. It improves lateral flexibility and can be performed at a desk or wherever a chair is available.

How to Perform

  • Sit tall on a chair with both feet flat on the floor and hands resting on your thighs
  • Take a deep breath in and, as you exhale, slowly bend your torso to the right, sliding your right hand down toward the floor
  • Reach your left arm up and over your head for an additional side stretch
  • Hold the stretched position for a moment, feeling the lengthening along your left side
  • Return upright on an inhale, then repeat the bend to the left side
  • Keep your hips grounded on the seat throughout the movement
  • Alternate sides for the desired number of reps
