About this exercise

A seated rotational exercise that simulates the bilateral paddling motion of a kayaker, using a towel for resistance while sitting on a padded stool. The alternating side-to-side rowing pattern trains the lats, obliques, and shoulders in a coordinated, functional movement.

How to Perform

  • Sit upright on a padded stool with feet flat on the floor and hold both ends of a towel in front of you
  • Keep the towel taut and your arms extended at chest height as your starting position
  • Rotate your torso to the right and sweep your right hand back and down as if pulling a paddle
  • Simultaneously bring your left hand forward to simulate the opposite paddle stroke
  • Rotate back through center and repeat the motion to the left side
  • Keep your core engaged and hips stable on the stool throughout
  • Continue alternating sides in a smooth, rhythmic paddling motion
