Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Seated Figure-4 Stretch.

EasyGlutes

About this exercise

A seated stretch that targets the piriformis and glute complex by crossing one ankle over the opposite thigh in a figure-4 position. It is one of the most effective stretches for relieving tension in the deep hip rotators and outer glute.

How to Perform

  • Sit on the floor with your legs extended, or sit upright on a firm surface
  • Bend your right knee and cross your right ankle over your left thigh, just above the knee
  • Flex your right foot to help protect the knee joint
  • Gently press your right knee downward to deepen the external rotation
  • Lean forward slightly from your hips — not your waist — until you feel a stretch in your right glute
  • Hold for the desired time, then switch sides
