Seated Cable Rear Delt Row

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Seated Cable Rear Delt Row.

MediumRear shoulders

About this exercise

A cable row variation that isolates the rear deltoid by pulling with elbows flared outward to roughly 90 degrees from the torso. Keeping the elbows high and wide de-emphasises the lats and places maximum tension on the posterior shoulder.

How to Perform

  • Set a cable pulley to a low position and attach a single-D handle (or use two handles for a bilateral version)
  • Stand or sit facing the cable stack with arms extended and a slight forward lean in the torso
  • Pull the handle toward the side of your head, leading with the elbow and flaring it out wide — the elbow should finish level with or above the shoulder
  • Squeeze the rear delt hard at the end of the pull
  • Slowly extend the arm back to the start under control and repeat
