About this exercise

The scapula push-up is a mobility and stability drill performed in a straight-arm plank position, focusing on controlled protraction and retraction of the shoulder blades without bending the elbows. It activates the serratus anterior and builds scapular stability essential for pressing and overhead movements.

How to Perform

  • Begin in a high plank position with arms fully extended, hands directly under shoulders
  • Keep your elbows locked and your body in a straight line from head to heels
  • Allow your shoulder blades to pinch together (retract) so your chest sinks slightly toward the floor
  • Push through your hands to spread your shoulder blades apart (protract) as far as possible
  • Hold the protracted position briefly, feeling the muscles around the shoulder blades engage
  • Return to the retracted position in a controlled manner and repeat
