Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Safety Bar Good Morning.

About this exercise

The safety bar good morning uses a safety squat bar resting across the upper back to perform a hip-hinge good morning, reducing shoulder and wrist strain while allowing heavier loading compared to a standard barbell good morning. The cambered bar's forward weight distribution encourages a deliberate hip push-back and thorough hamstring stretch.

How to Perform

  • Set the safety squat bar on the rack and position the yoke pads comfortably on your upper back and traps
  • Hold the handles out in front, unrack and take a shoulder-width stance with a slight knee bend
  • Brace your core and take a deep breath to create intra-abdominal pressure
  • Push your hips back and hinge at the hips until your torso is roughly parallel to the floor, keeping a neutral spine throughout
  • Feel a strong stretch in your hamstrings at the bottom of the movement
  • Drive your hips forward to return to standing, squeezing your glutes at the top
  • Exhale at the top, reset your breath, and repeat for the target number of reps
