Safety Bar Front Squat

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Safety Bar Front Squat.

HardQuadriceps

About this exercise

The safety bar front squat uses a safety squat bar placed across the front of the shoulders to perform a front squat, allowing a more upright torso with reduced wrist and shoulder strain compared to a standard barbell front squat. The cambered bar and padded yoke distribute load across the upper chest and front deltoids while preserving the quad-dominant mechanics of the front squat.

How to Perform

  • Set the safety squat bar on the rack at shoulder height and position the yoke pads across your upper chest and front deltoids
  • Hold the handles out in front, step under and unrack, then take a shoulder-width stance with toes turned out slightly
  • Brace your core, take a deep breath, and maintain an upright torso throughout the movement
  • Descend by pushing your knees out and sitting your hips straight down until your thighs are at least parallel to the floor
  • Keep your chest up and elbows high to prevent the bar from pulling you forward
  • Drive through your heels and mid-foot to press the floor away and return to standing
  • Exhale at the top, reset your breath, and repeat for the target number of reps
