About this exercise

The Running Plank is a dynamic core exercise performed in a high plank position in which the legs alternate in a rapid running-like motion, driving the knees toward the chest. It places a continuous isometric demand on the shoulders and core while the alternating leg drive adds a cardiovascular and hip-flexor training component. The movement is commonly used in circuit and conditioning workouts to build core endurance.

How to Perform

  • Start in a high plank with hands directly under your shoulders, body forming a straight line from head to heels
  • Brace your core and keep your hips level throughout the movement
  • Drive your right knee toward your chest as fast as control allows
  • Quickly return your right foot to the floor and simultaneously drive your left knee forward
  • Continue alternating legs in a rapid running motion while maintaining a stable upper body
  • Run for the prescribed duration without allowing the hips to rise or sag
