Rotator Cuff Warm-Up

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Rotator Cuff Warm-Up.

EasyRear shoulders

About this exercise

A pre-training mobility drill that activates and mobilises the four rotator cuff muscles — supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis — through controlled internal and external rotation movements. Regular performance helps prevent shoulder injuries and improves joint stability before pressing or pulling work.

How to Perform

  • Stand tall with your working arm bent to 90 degrees, elbow at shoulder height or at your side depending on the variation
  • Rotate the forearm outward (external rotation) in a slow, controlled arc until you feel tension in the rear shoulder
  • Pause briefly, then rotate the forearm inward (internal rotation) back through the starting position
  • Maintain a stable elbow position throughout — only the forearm moves
  • Perform the desired number of repetitions, then switch to the opposite arm if performing unilaterally
  • Keep the movement deliberate and use very light resistance or bodyweight only

About the Rotator Cuff Warm-Up

The Rotator Cuff Warm-Up is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
