About this exercise

A self-myofascial release technique targeting the rear shoulder and upper back using rotational body movement while lying on the floor. The rotation allows the roller to access multiple angles of the posterior shoulder and upper-back musculature.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side with the foam roller positioned under your rear shoulder and upper-back area
  • Stack your feet or stagger them for balance and support
  • Rotate your upper body slowly toward the floor and then back again to explore different angles on the rear shoulder and upper back
  • Use your free hand on the floor to control the amount of pressure applied by the roller
  • Pause and hold on any particularly tight or tender spots for 2–3 seconds
  • Continue rolling and rotating for the desired duration, then switch to the other side
