About this exercise

A self-myofascial release exercise performed in a recumbent (lying) position using a foam roller to address the hip external rotators and hip extensors, including the piriformis and gluteus muscles. This technique helps reduce tightness, improve hip mobility, and alleviate lower back discomfort.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your back and place the foam roller under your glutes and hips
  • Bend one knee and cross that ankle over the opposite knee to externally rotate the hip
  • Shift your weight onto the side being treated by slightly rolling to that hip
  • Use your hands on the floor for support and stability
  • Slowly roll across the glute and outer hip area, pausing on any tight or tender spots
  • Breathe steadily and allow the tissue to relax under the pressure
  • Continue for the desired duration, then switch sides
