About this exercise

A self-myofascial release technique performed in a side-lying position using a foam roller to target the peroneal muscles along the outer lower leg. Rolling the peroneals helps relieve lateral ankle tightness, improve eversion mobility, and reduce the risk of ankle sprains.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side on the floor and position the foam roller under the outer lower leg, between the ankle and knee
  • Support your upper body with your bottom arm and place your top hand on the floor in front of you for balance
  • Stack or cross your top leg over the bottom to allow you to control the pressure
  • Slowly roll from the ankle upward along the outer lower leg toward the knee
  • Pause on any tight or tender spots and hold for 20–30 seconds
  • Rotate your foot slightly to target different layers of the peroneal muscle group
  • Roll both legs, spending extra time on tighter areas
