About this exercise

A self-myofascial release technique targeting the lower back muscles performed side-lying on the floor. The side-lying position allows the roller to address the lumbar area and the muscles lateral to the spine with controlled pressure.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side on the floor with the foam roller positioned under your lower back
  • Use your forearm and feet to prop yourself up and control how much weight presses onto the roller
  • Slowly roll along the lower back from just below the ribs down toward the top of the hip
  • Adjust your body angle slightly forward or backward to target different areas lateral to the spine
  • Pause on any tight or tender spots for 2–3 seconds and breathe steadily
  • Continue rolling for the desired duration, then switch to the other side
