About this exercise

A myofascial release technique targeting the upper trapezius — the muscle spanning from the base of the skull to the shoulder and upper spine. Rolling it out relieves the chronic tension and headaches associated with stress, poor posture, and prolonged desk work.

How to Perform

  • Stand with your back to a wall and place the ball between the wall and the top of one shoulder, on the upper trapezius
  • Lean into the wall to apply comfortable pressure through the ball onto the muscle
  • Slowly roll the ball along the upper trap toward the neck and then out toward the shoulder
  • When you find a tender area, hold the pressure for 20–30 seconds while breathing slowly
  • Tilt your head gently to the opposite side to increase the stretch
  • Switch to the other side and repeat
